I play 95% of all my poker online. Considering the drive time it takes to make it to the casino's, tips, gas, etc. etc., playing online seems much more profitable. While online seems to bring in better cash, sometimes a guy wants some real live action.
I have done well at Live Cash Games, but as far as Live Tournaments with more than 50 players I have never made it into the money, until last night that is. I would say that I have only played in 10 Live Tourny's, and the majority of the time I make it down towards the final table and my pocket pairs get beat by a lower pocket pair hitting trips, or, you know the deal.
Last night, the buy in was $30 with a optional $20 rebuy (about 65 players). Usually I am avidly against rebuy's online, but when at a casino or private home game you cannot get into another game instantly and if you want to continue playing you have to pony up the dough or drive an hour home in misery. Mathematically rebuys are stupid, but I guess I was feeling a bit stupid last night.
I was weak throughout the entire tournament until the blinds hit 500/1000. I finally started catching some hands and built a modest stack of about 15,000 (which was the average at the time). Then I landed two huge hands, my QQ against A6. Flop hit 10 6 8 and I bet, opponent goes all in and I call winning about 35,000 in chips. A bit later against the same player I was holding 99 and the board hit 10 2 6. He checks, and I check. 7 falls on the turn and he goes all in again. I was so close to folding thinking he had A 10. I was fairly sure he did not have a pocket pair and I called to see he was playing A 2. Baam, that guy was the key to my victory.
From there my stack was very dominant and I was able to play my usual aggressive game shoving people around.
So were down to heads up 4000/8000 blinds, and I have twice the chips as my opponent. I have played a marvelous game until this point, and when I put in a raise most people were respecting it. So I decide to steal my opponents 8000 blind as he limps into the pot for 4000.
I raise 30,000 with my 3 4 off suit knowing he is going to fold. When he folded I was sure to show my lame hand infuriating him, and hoping to set him up for a huge all in very soon. Sure enough it worked. His play loosened up and mine switched back to tight waiting for the right moment. 5 or 6 hands later, I got the all in I wanted and won the $691 for first.
It's about time.................$$$$$$$$$$
